A question we often get asked by our customers is ‘what’s the difference between electric gates and automatic gates?
It’s worth being aware of the differences between the two, no matter how small, so that you can make the right decision when it comes to protecting your home or business property.
Here, we take a closer look at what electric and automatic gates are, and highlight the different types, so you can make an informed choice about which to go for.
What’s an electric gate?
As the name suggests, an electric gate is a gate that can be open and closed by an electric-powered control system.
Electric gates use either a hydraulic or an electro-mechanical motor to control the arms which open and close without having to push the gate. They can be manually operated remotely via an infrared key fob or a wall-mounted control unit.
Many electric gates comprise a locking mechanism and additional safety and security features to help protect your property, keep people safe and deter potential intruders.
They are used in many domestic and commercial settings, from driveways and entrance/exit roads to car parks and industrial estates.
What’s an automatic gate?
Automatic gates are very similar to electric gates in that they are usually powered by the same sort of electrical control system.
Where they differ, however, is that automatic gates make use of sensors, automated controls and operational logic to enable them to open and close automatically in response to certain actions, such as when a vehicle approaches.
Automatic gate systems can also interact with other systems, such as security alarms or CCTV, making them more suitable for use in a wide range of domestic, private, public, commercial and industrial environments.
These days, most electric gate systems have some form of automation built-in to make them more user-friendly and convenient. So, rather than think of them in terms of either electric or automatic gates, it’s better to think of them as an automated electric gate system, which offers many benefits.
Automated electric gates provide an excellent first line of defence for your home or business.
They can help keep your property, family and vehicles secure and protect your most valuable assets. They are also more cost-effective than you might think, with options to suit any budget.
Automated electric gates can provide the perfect solution if you’re serious about improving your home or business security.
However, depending on what you want to use them for, some automated electric gates are more suitable than others. Here are the main types:
Automatic electric swing gates
Swing gates come in a range of styles, including solid or ornamental, wooden or metal. An electrical motor is attached to mechanical arms that make the gates swing inwards or outwards (or both), depending on where they are used.
They are an excellent choice if you’re looking for gates that combine a stylish design and finish with a good level of security.
Automatic electric sliding gates
Sliding gates tend to be more secure than swing gates. Because of their more solid structure and fewer weak points than swing gates, they can be a lot harder to force open – even if a vehicle is used to gain access. Sliding gates are available in bigger sizes than swing gates, making them a good choice for larger industrial premises, such as business estates and car parks.
Automatic electric bi-fold gates
The main benefit of automatic bi-folding gates is speed – they are quicker to open and close than both swing and sliding gates, making them perfect for commercial settings that are busy and receive lots of customer footfall or traffic.
While they provide a reasonable level of safety, because of the speed they open and close, and their more complex mechanism, safety is a crucial consideration and operators much be trained to use them properly.
Automatic electric telescopic gates
Telescopic gates are like sliding gates but take up less space. When they open, the individual gate sections overlap. They provide a high level of security. Like most automatic gate systems, they can be operated by several access control mechanisms, making them a very flexible alternative to other types of electric gates.
